El taller fue auspiciado por la International Maritime Health Association. Resumimos las conclusiones de los grupos:

• Grupo 1: Acortar la extensión de los temas y readaptarlos al trabajo ya hecho, estableciendo las bases sobre las que se asiente. Deberían usarse las recomendaciones de la medicina basada en la evidencia y facilitar más bibliografía. Se reasignó la coordinación de este grupo a la Dra. Canals, la Dra Romero apoyará los temas de estadística y epidemiología, el Dr. Burgos los temas de accidentes de trabajo junto con la Dra. Grandes, el Dr. Nogueroles confeccionará una revisión histórica del tema, el Dr Tarrio aspectos relacionados con la calidad y organización de recursos, la Dra Muela y el Dr. Balanza completaran la epidemiología de enfermedades cronicas y profesionales.

• Grupo 2: la Dra. Mayo coordinó el grupo, añadirán aspectos psicológicos en los reconocimientos médicos especialmente en buceadores a los temas ya tratados para ello se contactará con un psicólogo clínico (Sr. Prados).



• Grupo: el Dr Tauriz coordinó el grupo, su trabajo con nuesva indexación está prácticamente terminado.



• Grupo 4: el Dr. Gómez coordinó el grupo y se decidió cambiar totalmente el estilo de los protocolos tanto de consultas por radio como ambulatorias, haciéndolos más esquemáticos. Se añadirán temas como las catástrofes y medicina de crucero.

Se aceptó la posibilidad de contar con expertos internacionales para ayudar en los temas y solicitar que la IMHA siga apoyando este grupo de trabajo el próximo año.

SUMMARY OF THE REPORTS

IMHA Workshop on A PRACTICAL GUIDE ON MARITIME MEDICINE

Vigo (Spain), 22 - 23 Sept. 2000

Dr. M. Luisa Canals IMHA board member and president of the Spanish Society of Maritime Medicine (SEMM) opened the session on 22nd September afternoon. In the opening session she explained the purpose of this guide and summarized previous meetings organized by SEMM . This project was proposed by a member of the SEMM in Oct 1996 as an activity for the following year and began in Oct 1997 with some collaboration in the first two meetings from the Instituto Social de la Marina in Spain. Communication between groups and at least meeting per year has been organized by SEMM. This year with the support of IMHA and the ITF Seafarers' Trust, that's why she made a previous presentation of both institutions.

Let's remember that this guide is for health staff - and specially doctors - and its main objective is to give a practical point of view to maritime medicine, collecting reviews of the main maritime medicine topics, creating protocols and other tools to guide in this special field of the occupational medicine. Four groups were created with main topics: 1 generalities and research, 2 medical fitness exams, 3 prevention and occupational medicine, 4 medical attendance.

Photocopies of the work done by the 4 groups were given to the participants and the coordinator of each group explain to the 18 participants present how the work was developed. Except the one from group 1 that was not able to attend the meeting, so it is decided that Dr. Canals coordinates this group.

The four groups are organized to work first by groups on the 23rd September and then in the afternoon meet again with the main conclusions. See the annexes with the documents prepared.

Main conclusions by groups were:

• Group no. 1: They decided to shorten some of the topics than they have prepared and readapt them according to what others groups have been talking about. This group should give just an overview related to research and establish a basis to the others groups. That's why they stressed that the rules of the medicine based on the evidence should be used in the recommendations and a bibliographic support should be taken into account (annexed). They reassigned main topics: general coordination Dr. Canals, Dr. Romero will support on epidemiology and statistics, Dr Burgos on research of accidents (with Dr. Grandes not present at this meeting), Dr Nogueroles will make a shorten historical review and Dr Tarrio (not present) will control the aspects related to quality, organization of ressources.

• Group no. 2: Dr. Mayo stressed the lack of a psychological point of view. A psychologist will be included in the group, specially in the medical exams for divers (annexed).



• Group no. 3: With the coordination of Dr Tauriz they got a more specified index and is nearly ready.



• Group n. 4: Dr. Gómez stressed the radio-medical consultation style, they will remake the style into more simple and schematic protocols and will include cathastrophes and cruisse medicine (annexed). So they expect the collaboration with the other IMHA workshop.

The possibility of a next meeting with the support of IMHA is suggested for next year.
