- Bienvenidos /
Welcome. Seafarer's health
is one of the main objectives of the Spanish
Society of Maritime Medicine and that implies not
only research but also continuing education.
That's why in 1998, with some support of European
Founds throught the Agriculture, Fishing and Food
Ministry, we sponsored a Spanish version of this
"Refresher Course on Health Education and
First-aid at Sea" via internet. The idea
come from one of our members who joint others to
extend the text. So this course was born to help
seafarers and health staff related to them to
support some international recommendations [STCW
(1995), 92/29 EC Directive ...] about a refresher
course on first-aids and medical care on board at
least every 5 years for the responsible person of
health matters in the ship. This Spanish version
of the course was presented in Valencia (Spain) in 1998 and
in London in 1999 in an international meeting.
Then the idea of a translation was suggested and
we asked for support to the International
Maritime Health Associaton and ITF-Seafarer's
Trust. We received a grant from them and Dr.
Christopher Scott-Tennent prepared the translation
of the Spanish text. It was presented in 2000 in
two international meetings (Tenerife and Cadiz).
We have also consulted different international
maritime medicine experts to re-adapt and
complete this English version. Any suggestion
will be welcome.
